I got an email the other day that honestly surprised me (bolding is mine):
Today, Frontend Masters becomes Master.dev
For years our name has said one thing while our catalog has said another. “Frontend Masters” tells you we teach frontend. And we do, better than anyone. But look at what developers are actually learning from us right now. Of our most-watched courses, a huge share have nothing to do with the frontend at all. Complete Go for Professional Developers. The Rust Programming Language. Complete Intro to Databases. Cloud Infrastructure from Startup to Scale. Enterprise Java with Spring Boot. Linux and the command line, Git, Containers, DevOps, SQL, Python, C, C#… etc.
And then there’s where the industry is going. Four of our ten most popular courses right now are about AI: Claude Code, AI Engineering Fundamentals, AI Agents Fundamentals, and Practical Prompt Engineering. [...]
The name stopped describing the work a while ago.
So today we are Master.dev.
For those who might not know, Frontend Masters is (was? Now with the name change) an amazing source of high-quality courses on everything you need for frontend.
Back in the day, when I got my first job as a junior frontend developer (not knowing a lick of HTML tbh... I managed to pass the interview from studying a crash course on YouTube. Things were very different back then), the first thing I did after was to sign up and absorb as much frontend knowledge as I could for those first 6 months. Top-knotch courses from amazing teachers like Kyle Simpson with JS or Jen Kramer with her lovely CSS flexbox + grid lessons. It’s where I really got my frontend fundamentals, so I have a lot of respect and love for the work everybody there does.
Yet the name change hurt me in my soul
I don’t disagree with what was said in the announcement. Frankly, it makes sense. They don’t do only frontend anymore. There’s a bigger interest in learning AI and leveraging it. So they went with a title that allows them to communicate to others that they don’t only do fronten— wait a minute.
Did... did they just do what I think they did?
Did they do the equivalent of crossing out “Frontend” on the resume and replacing it with full-stack to get a job? 👀
MARC YOU SLY DAWG YOU! YOU REALLY ARE A FRONTEND DEV TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THIS WORLD. I KNEW YOU DIDN’T REALLY CHANGE.

Anyway, sorry. I got distracted. That was too funny not to side tangent into. Where was I?
Oh yeah! I was saying that...
The name change hurt me because it’s another indicator that we are trending away from being specialists in our industry
The truth is, I love frontend. I love the impact and types of problems that only really happen on the presentation layer. And if it wasn’t for the massive changes created by AI in the past few years, I probably would have specialized even more than I had been in the last 4 years.
That’s not to say there isn’t a place for them, especially for bigger companies, where I believe specialists really thrive. But I think a lot of us have seen a huge push in demand for more generalists (AKA people who can “figure it out” in any domain) in many other smaller to medium-sized companies.
So with that bigger demand in generalists, it makes sense for companies, especially with “Frontend” in the title, to feel awkward continuing to market themselves towards specialists. Especially if they do things for everybody.
I even had a friend the other day ask me why I hadn’t changed my brand name for similar reasons
I mean, I’m not really focusing on “frontend” stuff as heavily myself. My new focus is on helping devs translate their technical talent into business impact (i.e, make business money, you make more money). Despite that being true, there’s still one big reason why I consider my work to be targeted towards frontend peeps.
It’s because the developers who have specialized in frontend are the people who are the most likely to KILL IT when it comes to this business stuff.
A lot of it is because of the specific set of skills that we’ve honed over the years. Which, coincidentally, are very compatible with what I teach in resources like my “💎Irreplaceable💎” book!

Also, it was COOL to learn Frontend from the “Frontend Masters”. Felt like I had to walk up to a mountain in the Himalayas to learn CSS secrets. I’m going to miss that.
